미군과 영국군, 호주군이 함께 있는 연합군 전쟁 포로 수용소에 있는 미군 상병 킹(Corporal King: 조지 시걸 분)은 수용소에서 암시장을 꾸려나가고 있다. 다른 포로들이 비참한 생활을 하는 동안 킹은 자신이 빼돌린 물품으로 주변 인물들을 자기 마음대로 부린다. 킹의 이런 암거래 활동은 담배나 식품으로 상사들까지 자기 편으로 끌어들인 덕에 킹의 공식적으로 전혀 문제가 되지 않고 영국 장교 그레이(Lieutenant Grey: 탐 커트니 분) 중위만이 킹을 처벌하려고 시시탐탐 노릴 뿐이다. 한편 킹은 영국 장교 피터 말로우(Peter Marlowe: 제임스 폭스 분)가 원주민과 대화를 하는 모습을 보고 그를 끌어들여 좀더 돈을 챙기려는 목적으로 말로우를 자기편으로 만든다. 말로우는 킹이 일본 장교들과도 장사를 할 수 있도록 그의 구역을 넓혀주고 두 사 람은 서로 공생하며 우정의 감정을 키워간다. 그 후 킹은 쥐를 키워 쥐고기를 팔기도 하며 재미를 보는데 어느 날 말로우가 사고로 팔을 절단하게 될 위기에 처하자 귀한 항생제를 구해서 생명을 구해준다.

When Singapore surrendered to the Japanese in 1942, the Allied POWs, mostly British but including a few Americans, were incarcerated in Changi prison. There were no walls or barbed-wire fences for the simple reason that there was no place for the prisoners to escape to. Included among the prisoners is the American Cpl. King, a wheeler dealer who has managed to established a pretty good life for himself in the camp. While most of the prisoners are near starvation and have uniforms that are in tatters, King eats well and and has crisp clean clothes to wear every day. King soon forms a friendship with Lt. Peter Marlowe, an upper class British officer who is fascinated with King's lan approach to life.
