20년전, 멕시코에서 한 젊은 남자가 30명의 여자를 살해한 후 시체를 정원에 파묻어 버린 엽기적인 사건이 일어났다.
당시 범인은 정신병원에 입원했지만 현재 그는 퇴원하여 소설가로 활동 중이다.
조도로프스키는 이 인물을 직접 만나 살인을 하게 된 경위등을 상세하게 인터뷰한 후 경찰을 통해 그의 진술이 모두 진실임을 확인하는 작업을 마쳤다.
그로부터 6년의 세월이 지나서야 의 시나리오를 완성한 것이다.

A young man is confined in a mental hospital.
Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre ("Holy Blood"), and then commit suicide.
Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother.
